Waterfalls of Western North Carolina :: Catawba Falls

Catawba Falls is one of three very nice waterfalls on the Catawba River just outside Old Fort. Catawba Falls has a new parking area with restrooms!

Driving Directions: From Asheville, NC take i-40 East to exit 73, then take a sharp right onto Catawba River Rd. Follow this road for three miles to its end, cross the bridge, and park in the large new parking area. GPS assisted driving directions are available in my iPhone app.

You can find the trail in the top right corner of the parking lot. Follow it to the first water crossing. Most of the time you can rock hop here but if you cannot there is an alternate path to the left that leads to a rickety log with a handrail nailed to it. If the river is really high you might consider the rickety log but most of the time I would rather wade the creek.

Stay on the main trail past many side paths and old concrete structures. Pass by an old dam, then cross the creek on a large fallen tree. You will soon reach the base of the falls.
